January is School Board Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the service and commitment of the Melissa ISD Board of Trustees and the many ways they support students, staff, and programs across the district. The Board includes Board President Paul Anderson, Board Vice President Omar Landrum, Board Secretary Amy Feagin, Dr. Bill Gray, Darren Thompson, Quentin Thomason, and George James.
Beyond regular board meetings, Melissa ISD trustees commit time to ongoing learning and consistent engagement across campuses and programs, reinforcing their focus on informed decision-making and student success. Trustees regularly attend milestone events such as graduation, academic showcases, and districtwide celebrations recognizing student excellence. They are consistently present at athletic, fine arts, and academic events at both the local and state level, showing visible support for Cardinals in classrooms, on stages, and on the field.
“Graduation is also a great moment as a trustee,” said MISD Board Vice President Omar Landrum. “It’s the moment you hope you’ve done everything possible to prepare our Cardinals for the next phase of life and beyond.”
Board members also support student learning by sharing professional expertise and creating real-world connections. Quentin Thomason has shared his business experience with students by presenting to DECA and participating in an International Baccalaureate Lunch and Learn, helping students connect classroom learning to future career pathways.
Paul Anderson leads an annual fall community service project called “Fill the Fan Bus.” During the event, students donate canned food to their classrooms, after which he and his team collect the items. Classrooms with the highest donations at each campus are celebrated with Breakfast with Birdie.
In fine arts, trustees regularly attend events from elementary music programs to middle and high school band, choir, and theatre performances. All seven trustees attended the Area Marching Contest to support the Mighty Cardinal Band, and they assisted with behind-the-scenes needs, including transporting sets for the East Cardinal Middle School One Act Play and coordinating technical support for high school productions.
“One of the greatest strengths of our fine arts program is the unwavering support behind it,” said Melissa ISD Director of Fine Arts Jerry Whorton. “These are selfless contributors who believe in the value of a complete fine arts education. Their presence, advocacy, and servant leadership make a lasting difference for our students and programs every single day.”
Trustees actively engage with staff across the district. George James and Amy Feagin spoke at the district convocation, sharing encouragement with all staff members, while Darren Thompson expressed his appreciation at the Teacher of the Year awards dinner. Trustees also attend other staff celebrations, demonstrating ongoing support for educators.
Board Trustees Bill Gray and Omar Landrum attended a Gifted and Talented Conference alongside the district’s GT department, participating in sessions on instructional strategies, social-emotional development, and program innovation. Their insights help guide thoughtful decisions to support diverse student needs.
Melissa ISD Executive Director of Campus Services Walter Perez said, “Their willingness to invest personal time in professional learning reflects a strong dedication to ensuring all students receive the opportunities they deserve to reach their fullest potential.”
Trustees also contribute to long-term planning and innovation, supporting initiatives that provide inclusive, future-ready learning environments. Their careful stewardship of resources and focus on what is best for students help guide responsible growth across the district.
Melissa ISD is grateful for a Board of Trustees whose service extends well beyond the boardroom. Through continued learning, consistent presence, and a strong commitment to students, staff, and the community, their work plays a vital role in supporting the success of our schools and families.
