On Wednesday, December 3, the Melissa High School HOSA program had 40 students and three CTE Staff members volunteer at Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit organization in Richardson that provides nutritious meals to children in need. These students worked to pack nutritious meal kits for children and families around the world.
Students also had the opportunity to learn the importance of a balanced diet as well as utilize hands-on skills learned in the classroom in a real world environment. Through this hand-on service experience, students demonstrated teamwork, compassion and a commitment to making a positive difference in their global community.
Melissa High School HOSA Sponsor, Tashauna Causey, reflected on the experience. "As the new sponsor for HOSA, this was my first time attending Feed My Starving Children. To know that 6 million children die of starvation each second, and to be directly involved in the process of providing nutrition to children in need, was eye-opening and unforgettable. The organization explained to us that the number of boxes (117) we packaged during an hour would feed 65 children for a full year. We competed to see who could package the most boxes, and we made a valuable experience fun. The work they do is so meaningful, and it was a blessing to be part of it. I went home that day and told my family all about it, and I can't wait to take my own children. If you ever have the time, I highly recommend it to any and everyone."
“Feed My Starving Children was such a wonderful volunteer opportunity to give to children who are less fortunate. Being able to serve others with HOSA has not only made me grateful for what I do have, but opened my eyes to those who might not have as much,” shared senior HOSA student, Kennedi Wright. “A part that really stuck with me after the experience was how many children pass away from hunger worldwide each second. Overall, I'm so thankful to be able to have this opportunity to help others, and I'm looking forward to doing this with HOSA again in January!”
Not only did the HOSA program support a meaningful cause, but they also strengthened their understanding of service, leadership, and global citizenship. Their efforts reflect the heart of the HOSA program and the values they strive to instill in every Cardinal!
