Melissa ISD students in the Law Enforcement Practicum program have had a number of unique learning experiences this semester, each designed to deepen their understanding of criminal justice careers and how agencies serve the community. Through partnerships with federal and local professionals, students are gaining real insight into what a future in law enforcement could look like.
Students were invited by Collin County Sheriff Jim Skinner to learn about the VALOR Program. They also toured the Federal Courthouse in Sherman, where they met U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant, observed a live trial, and heard from professionals including U.S. Marshals, federal probation officers, a U.S. Attorney, and a Public Defender.
Law Enforcement Teacher Tiffany Nickles shared the purpose behind these incredible student opportunities, “It's always my goal to create the most impactful experiences for all my students, but as seniors, practicum students are getting ready to embark on their next chapter. Having a year of learning that takes them outside the classroom and offers them a glimpse into their field of interest can help them decide what they want to do and what they don't want to do. Meeting and connecting with people in the professional world can lead to internships, jobs, mentors, and just a better understanding of the many career opportunities that are available to them. It's exciting to watch them soak up all the new knowledge and actually see the wheels turning as they make big decisions about their future!"
Senior Ava Salazar reflected on how these opportunities are shaping her future, “Visiting the Federal Courthouse gave me a real look into how justice works beyond the classroom. Seeing the impact this program has on people and hearing their stories was incredibly motivating and it strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in criminal justice. Learning about and seeing the VALOR Program gave me a better understanding of what real work in the justice system looks like. It was inspiring and definitely influenced how I see my future career."
Through hands-on activities, mentorship, and exposure to multiple career paths, these students are gaining the confidence and clarity they need as they prepare for their next steps in service and public safety. Opportunities like these reflect Melissa High School’s commitment to providing CTE and Practicum students with meaningful experiences that connect learning to leadership and future success.
