Safety Training

UPDATE: This training has been moved to North Creek Elementary from SGC.

The Melissa ISD Police Department is partnering with the City of Melissa Police Department to host a Texas State ALERRT Level 1 Training for local law enforcement July 28–31 at the new Melissa Sixth Grade Center (3150 Cardinal Dr., Melissa, Texas 75454). The training will bring in approximately 50 officers from across the region for two separate, two-day sessions focused on advanced emergency response tactics and school-based safety procedures.

As part of this training, the community should expect an increased law enforcement presence in the area, along with additional traffic and official vehicles near the Sixth Grade Center. Portions of the training will take place outdoors and may involve loud, simulated emergency scenarios.

Melissa ISD is proud to support and facilitate this high-level training, which enhances safety practices not only within our district but across the region. It reflects the Melissa ISD Police Department’s strong and ongoing commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and student-centered safety.

That same commitment is exemplified by MISD Chief of Police Chris Fontana, who recently completed the Texas School-Based Law Enforcement Master Training Program through the Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University. As one of a distinguished group of graduates recognized in San Antonio on July 11, 2025, Chief Fontana’s achievement speaks to his dedication to the safety and well-being of our Cardinals. His leadership continues to strengthen school-based policing practices right here in Melissa.

The Master Training Program is the highest level of school-based law enforcement training in Texas and serves as the capstone to a rigorous 128-hour curriculum accredited by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. The coursework explores best practices and research-based strategies in areas such as youth mental health, adolescent brain development, suicide prevention, restorative justice, gang awareness, social media investigations, and strategic campus safety planning. The program is designed to prepare officers for leadership in school policing and student-centered safety efforts.

Following his graduation, Chief Fontana joined the Texas State: Texas Schools Safety Center instructional team, where he will now be teaching classes in his area of expertise to SBLE’s and SRO’s across the state pertaining to crimes against children. His work exemplifies Melissa ISD’s continued commitment to safety, leadership, and service to students.

Melissa ISD appreciates the community’s patience and awareness during the upcoming training and remains dedicated to maintaining safe, well-prepared campuses for all.
