As Melissa ISD works to ensure student safety and maintain a culture of academic excellence, the decision was made to redirect new students enrolling at Harry McKillop Elementary, as the campus has reached enrollment capacity due to the continued fast growth of the community.
New students enrolling after June 1 who are zoned to attend Harry McKillop Elementary will be redirected to attend one of the three other Melissa ISD elementary campuses. It is possible that space will open up at Harry McKillop Elementary as the school year begins. In this case, redirected families will be contacted with the option to redirect their students back to Harry McKillop Elementary.
Extensive planning goes into every decision that is made by the district to meet the needs of our rapidly-growing community. We understand that for some families, this change is a cause for concern. Please know that the district is sensitive to the needs of each family, we welcome all feedback, and we will always prioritize student safety and cultivating an environment of academic excellence.
Looking ahead, it is an exciting time as Melissa ISD is opening a fourth K-5 elementary school this fall with Sumeer Elementary, and there are already plans to open a fifth elementary campus as quickly as possible. Families can expect attendance zoning reconfigurations to continue as Melissa continues to grow at a rapid pace.
Starting next week, all Melissa ISD offices will be closed for a two-week period to allow for technology and operational updates. Central administration and Melissa High School offices will reopen July 10 and all other school offices will reopen July 17.
Upon reopening, the district will work with individual families impacted by the Harry McKillop Elementary redirects. In the interim, we encourage families to review the Melissa ISD enrollment and registration information and resources posted online at www.melissaisd.org/enroll to prepare for the upcoming school year. Parents and guardians can also email specific questions regarding Harry McKillop Elementary redirects to connect@melissaisd.org.
This redirect procedure does not apply to: 1) returning students who attended Harry McKillop Elementary last year, and 2) new students zoned to attend Harry McKillop Elementary who were enrolled before June 1. Parents/guardians will receive communication that confirms their student’s attendance at Harry McKillop Elementary for the 2023-2024 school year.
