Four students from the Melissa High School choir program were selected to advance to the area competition next month, each vying for a spot in the Texas Small School All-State Choir. Kaycee Fender, John Goers, Gabi Jones, and Logan Lowery will compete at area on Jan. 8, 2022.

In preparation for the pre-area competition last month, the students learned “Laudate Jehovam Omnes Gentes” by G. P. Telemann and “Bésame Mucho” by Julio Morales. The audition required the students to perform a small selection from each piece of music and sight-read eight measures of music for a panel of five judges.

“I am so proud of our students’ hard work and their ability to sing and sight-read under pressure,” said choir director Ryan Smith. On Thursday, Dec. 9, the community is invited to attend the Melissa Choir Christmas Concert at the Melissa Arts Center, featuring performances by the choirs of Melissa High School and Melissa Middle School. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and is free to attend.
