Marching band performs their show, "Flight 2-0-2-1"

The Melissa High School Mighty Cardinal Band will advance to the 2021 UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, performing in the preliminary round at 2:15 p.m. in hopes of advancing to the finals later that evening.

Melissa Band Showcase & State Sendoff

Prior to traveling to the state contest, the band will perform a full run of their competition show, “Flight 2-0-2-1”, at the Melissa Band Showcase and State Sendoff on Monday, Nov. 8, 2021 at Cardinal Stadium. The showcase will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free to attend.


State Band Watch Party

In the event that the Mighty Cardinal Band advances to the state finals, the community is invited to attend a State Band Watch Party at the Melissa Arts Center on Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 6:45 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. to watch a livestream of the final performance and the awards ceremony.

This year’s competition show, “Flight 2-0-2-1”, includes the following music selections and composers:

  • “Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin
  • “Fly Like an Eagle” from the Steve Miller Band
  • “One Day I'll Fly Away” from Moulin Rouge
  • “Mr. Blue Sky” from the Electric Lights Orchestra
  • “Thunderstruck” by ACDC
  • “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz
  • “Learn to Fly” by the Foo Fighters, arranged by John Fannin
