Congratulations to the Melissa High School Girls Cross Country team who competed at the UIL 5A Regional Championships on Monday, October 20, with the team placing in 3rd overall and qualifying as a team for the UIL 5A State Championship Meet.
In the 5K race, freshman Addison Hanshaw led the Cardinals with a time of 18:40 followed by senior Diem Casselberry, sophomores Grace Vuong and Alex Holguin, freshman Emmy Burns, and sophomore Vanessa Intrieri. These athletes had an incredible showing at Regionals, proving what can happen when talent meets dedication and a group of athletes commits to something bigger than themselves.
The cross country girls are entering the State meet ranked No. 5 in 5A after one of the most successful seasons in school history. Bringing home medals, setting numerous personal records, and earning meet champion honors are just a few of the accomplishments that have all contributed to the success these athletes have made throughout the season.
"I couldn't be more proud of these girls. They have worked so diligently and maintained such a strong focus throughout the entire season,” Varsity Girls Cross Country Coach Zachary Hernandez shared. “These girls are a testament to what happens when talent meets commitment, and their hard work has truly paid off this season."
Senior Diem Casselberry reflected on her final high school season, saying, “This cross country season has been great, especially seeing how much the team has changed. We've gotten a lot closer and pushed each other through some tough workouts, and it's been awesome to be a part of building that culture. Making it back to the state meet is a huge honor, but doing it with the whole team this time makes it even better. I'm just really excited to get out there and run the state course with them. Sharing this moment is exactly what all those miles were for."
Freshman Addison Hanshaw also shared, “As an incoming freshman, I was very nervous, but my season has turned out to be successful and enjoyable. I feel I have grown as a runner and a person this season. I appreciate my teammates, and I am glad I got to share memories of countless practices, meets, and good times with them. I’m grateful for our team captain, Diem Casselberry’s, leadership and guidance. I am excited for the opportunity to compete and do my best at State."
Congratulations to the entire team on an incredible season, and best of luck as they compete at the State Championships on Saturday, November 7, at 8:15 a.m. at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
