Melissa High School Visual Arts Shines at State VASE Competition

The Melissa High School Visual Art program proudly showcased the talents of two exceptional students, senior Sophia Helton and freshman Prajwal Saha, who represented MHS at the Texas High School State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) held on April 24-25. Their artwork, carefully chosen from over 32,000 high school art entries, stood out among the crowd, with only the top 10% of Texas High School artists advancing to the state level.

Both Sophia and Prajwal have participated in VASE multiple times throughout their academic careers. Despite not having room in their schedules for an art class this year, they remained committed to their craft, dedicating time outside of their already busy schedules to create original artwork and to continue competing.

“This marks my fifth and final year competing in VASE,” said Sophia. “It has been a wonderful journey that has allowed me to create and share what I love. Being surrounded by so many talented artists has inspired me, pushing me to grow and shaping who I am today. I am deeply grateful for the memories and fulfillment this experience has given me, and I know I will truly miss it.”

Though just a freshman, Prajwal encouraged fellow VASE competitors to take their time and be intentional with their work, “Spending time noticing the small details helped me the most.”

Participation in the VASE competition requires students to not only create original artwork but also to articulate a narrative that reflects on their creative journey and understanding of visual arts, engaging in thoughtful discussions with judges about their pieces.

Both students received a rating of 4 for their artwork, with 4 being the highest attainable score. Congratulations to these talented individuals and to the entire Visual Arts program for their dedication and hard work throughout the year.
