The Melissa High School Band earned 7 First Division ratings at the Region 25 UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest on February 28, with 55 musicians qualifying for the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) in Austin this May.
The UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest challenges students to perform either individually or in small groups for a panel of adjudicators. A First Division rating, the highest possible score, signifies exceptional musicianship. Students who memorize and perform a Class 1 solo, the most advanced category of music, qualify to compete at TSSEC. State qualifiers performed music selected from a collegiate-level repertoire, showcasing their skill and dedication.
State qualifiers will perform for judges, including professional musicians and college professors. Those who earn a First Division at State receive a gold medal, and the most outstanding performers earn the distinguished title of “Outstanding Performer,” a rare honor awarded to only a select few across the state.
