Congratulations to Melissa High School Boys Basketball Coach, Stephen Friar, for reaching a remarkable milestone of 200 career victories in only nine years as a head coach with a win against the Sherman High School on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026.
“High school basketball isn’t just wins and losses. The real victories are in growth, character, and relationships that last a lifetime. There’s no testimony without a test. Stepping out on faith and trusting God’s plan brought me here. Also allowed me to be blessed with great coaches, players and a supportive administration/community,” said Coach Friar, reflecting on this milestone. “The scoreboard counts points; God counts growth and that's where the real wins lie.”
Coach Friar has been at the helm of the Cardinal Boys Basketball program for the past three seasons. Before joining Melissa, he spent six successful seasons as the head coach at Frisco Liberty High School. Over the course of these 200 wins, Coach Friar has amassed seven playoff appearances, three District Championships, four Bi-district Championships, an Area Championship, and a Regional Quarterfinal appearance. He was also named three-time District Coach of the Year.
The Cardinals have had a strong season, going 10-4 in district, finishing as the first place big school. Cheer on the Cardinals tomorrow night, February 24, at 7:00 p.m., at Forney High School as they take on Tyler High School in the UIL 5A-Division 1 Bi-District round of basketball playoffs.
