Lady Cardinals Break National Home Run Record

The Melissa High School softball team continues to make history, now holding the national high school softball record for most home runs in a single season. The Cardinals achieved this feat during Game 1 of their UIL Class 5A Regional Semifinal series against Midlothian on May 8, 2025, surpassing the previous national record of 105 home runs set by North DeSoto High School in Louisiana in 2022.

The milestone came in the third inning when sophomore Izzy Gonzales hit a home run, tying the record. Shortly after, left fielder Paisley Needham stepped up and hit another solo shot, setting the new record at 106. The team's power surge continued as shortstop Caigan Crabtree added one more in the fifth inning, bringing the total to 107 home runs.

Since that game, the Cardinals have increased their power, now boasting 112 home runs for the season. Earlier this year, they also broke the state record they set just last season, marking yet another impressive achievement for the team.

Melissa’s explosive offense has been the driving force behind their undefeated season, currently standing at 34-0. As the Cardinals move forward in the playoffs, they remain focused on securing a second consecutive state title, with their slogan “Keep the Crown.”
