Melissa ISD elementary schools made an outstanding impact in the 2025 H-E-B School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge, earning 2nd place in the H-E-B Metro East Area. From March 4 to April 4, students from Willow Wood Elementary, North Creek Elementary, Sumeer Elementary, and Harry McKillop Elementary worked together to collect thousands of plastic bags, helping promote recycling and reduce plastic waste.
Collectively, Melissa ISD’s four elementary schools gathered an impressive 130,138 plastic bags — outpacing much larger districts in the Metro East Area. For comparison:
Allen ISD collected 163,977 bags (14 schools)
Melissa ISD collected 130,138 bags (4 schools)
Frisco ISD collected 114,801 bags (19 schools)
Plano ISD collected 74,884 bags (7 schools)
McKinney ISD collected 60,727 bags (9 schools)
Prosper ISD collected 899 bags (1 school)
Each Melissa ISD campus showed incredible leadership, dedication, and community spirit, with every school collecting more than 10,000 bags:
Harry McKillop Elementary: 70,992 bags
North Creek Elementary: 30,200 bags
Sumeer Elementary: 16,355 bags
Willow Wood Elementary: 12,591 bags
Across the state, 792 schools participated, collecting more than 6.7 million plastic bags and setting a new record for Texas. Harry McKillop Elementary helped lead the way for Melissa ISD, earning a 2nd place finish in the North West Region.
