Melissa ISD Fine Arts Director Jerry Whorton was recognized by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) at the Texas Bandmasters Association Conference, receiving the organization’s Outstanding Contributor Award.
The award recognizes individuals for their outstanding dedication, passion, and contributions to the students and directors of small school bands in Texas. Recipients are honored for going above and beyond to support students and band directors and uphold the values of the organization. Whorton was part of the inaugural class of recipients to receive the award, recognizing his dedication, passion, and contributions to students and directors of small school bands throughout Texas.
The Association of Texas Small School Bands is dedicated to promoting and supporting small school band programs across Texas and encouraging the continued development of music education in Texas public schools.
“It is truly humbling to be recognized by an organization that helped shape me as both a student and an educator. The values I learned through music and the mentors who invested in me have guided my philosophy throughout the past 20 years in education,” shared Whorton. “This recognition is a reminder that our work has never been about awards. It has always been about students. The experiences we create in our classrooms each day, here in Melissa ISD and in schools across Texas, are what inspire me to serve. That is my 'why.'”
Whorton has served Melissa ISD for 10 years, including as a high school head band director and Fine Arts Director. During his time with the district, he has been part of Melissa's growth while creating opportunities for students and advocating for the importance of Fine Arts education in public schools.
“I am grateful to share this honor with the students who have trusted me, the Melissa community that continually supports fine arts, my outstanding colleagues, and the administrators who have encouraged and believed in me along the way. Their investment in students is what makes recognitions like this possible, and I am honored to be a small part of that story."
