Congratulations to the Melissa High School Ruby Belles Dance Team for being named the Classic Medium Team State Champions at the Centennial Crowd Pleasers Dance State Championship contest on Saturday, February 28. In their first competition season, the team delivered an outstanding performance at their state competition, earning Best in Class Lyrical, Best in Class Jazz, and 1st Runner-Up Pom on their way to winning their division and bringing home a state championship for Melissa.
“The team has worked incredibly hard all season to be the best we can be to represent Melissa,” said Ruby Belles Dance Director Joanna Ingram. “I am so proud of their resiliency and determination to go out and compete in their first year. They stepped up to the challenge and have set a standard that we hope to continue and grow from in the years to come.”
The Ruby Belles Dance Team had an incredible first competition season, beginning with the Ascension Dance regional competition on February 14 at Frisco Heritage High School, which marked the program’s first-ever competition since its creation. The team earned a Judges Award for scoring 90 or higher on all routines, along with Best in Class Lyrical and 1st Runner-Up Jazz, highlighting a strong start to their inaugural season. Ruby Belles dancers and officers also received several individual recognitions across both competitions, further showcasing the talent and hard work of the team.
“This first-year celebration of our dance program is something I am truly grateful for," said Director of Fine Arts Jerry Whorton. "Through the shared vision of Joanna Ingram, her students, and her staff, a standard of excellence has already been established. Their work has enriched the culture of Melissa High School and elevated the opportunities our students experience every day.”
Ruby Belle Sophomore Leah Schuster reflected on her first season, “We were nervous to perform, but confident that we were prepared and our hard work would pay off. Competing with this team was fun and rewarding!”
Congratulations to the Ruby Belles Dance Team on an outstanding first competition season and this remarkable state championship achievement. Melissa ISD is proud of the program’s accomplishments since their establishment in the 2024-2025 school year. In such a short time, the Ruby Belles have already set a strong foundation of excellence, dedication, and teamwork. The district looks forward to seeing the continued growth and success of the Ruby Belles Dance Team and the bright future ahead for this talented program.
