Three Melissa High School students were selected by the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) to perform with the 2020 All-State Band.
Senior Emma Piyakhun plays the oboe, junior Jack Griset plays percussion, and sophomore Dasha Stepanova plays the flute in the Mighty Cardinal Band under the direction of Jerry Whorton. The students placed in the top chair of their section at the area level of the competition and went on to receive all-state honors for the first time this year.
“These three students displayed high-levels of hard work and dedication throughout this extensive process,” said Jerry Whorton, Director of Bands. “I am very proud of their perseverance and drive toward high levels of success.”
Last fall, 41 students from Melissa Middle School and 39 students from Melissa High School earned a spot in the All-Region Band, and 20 high school students advanced to area.
Emma, Jack, and Dasha are three of only 280 students from across the state who were selected for the All-State Band out of more than 10,000 high school students who entered the competition. The All-State Band will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Conference next month in San Antonio.
