This week’s spotlight shines on Misti Kusano. Ms. Kusano is a teacher in the pre-school program (PPCD) at Harry McKillop Elementary; she has worked in Melissa for seven years. She was nominated for The Spotlight by Walter Perez, principal at Harry McKillop Elementary.

Misti’s Fun Facts:

  • My husband and I have 3 amazing children, and we have been a part of the Melissa Cardinal Family for almost 12 years.
  • I enjoy movie nights with my family.
  • I love visiting my parents in East Texas; they live on a lake and love to cook.

When and why did you decide that you wanted to work in education?

Misti: When I was elementary school age, my Grandfather was a school custodian. He would bring home items teachers were cleaning out, during the summers. I would play school for hours. From that moment, I knew I wanted to be a teacher.

What is your favorite lesson to teach, or what is your favorite part of your job?

Misti: My favorite part of my job is watching the little ones get so excited when they have learned a new skill or have made new friends. They just love each other no matter what!

Which of our core values do you connect with the most and why?

Misti: The core value I most connect with is Humility – “understanding we are fallible and to live with grace and dignity”. As a teacher, mom, wife and friend, I feel it is important to remember we have to give grace to receive it, and we grow through the challenges we face each day.

What is the best part about being a Melissa Cardinal?

Misti: The best part of being a Melissa Cardinal is the supportive team of colleagues, administration, and parents. This wonderful team of people continue to help me learn and grow each day.

The Spotlight is an ongoing feature where we showcase our leaders at Melissa Schools. Check back each week during the school year to meet someone new, or to get to know a familiar face.
