This week’s Teacher Spotlight shines on April Phillips from Melissa High School, nominated by Principal Mike Carter. Ms. Phillips teaches various levels of English I through IV, and this is her seventh year in Melissa.

Fun Facts:

  • I have traveled to 5 out of 7 continents.
  • Some of my favorite adventures were hot air ballooning and skydiving.
  • Recently my brother found documents from the Korean War about my father’s adoption.

When and why did you decide that you wanted to become a teacher?

The summer of 1998 I taught English in Mozambique. I had always worked with children through the YMCA but the mission trip focused my attention on being able to give back in a more direct way … so here I am with 14 years in public school.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?

I have several favorites including; “Romeo and Juliet”, poetry, and Edgar Allen Poe. However, my favorite lessons are the lessons students teach me about themselves with their favorite books.

What is your favorite Core Value and why?
