The Teacher Spotlight is a weekly piece where we feature our leaders at Melissa Schools. Check back each Monday during the school year to meet a new teacher!

This week’s Teacher Spotlight shines on Emily Larkin from Harry McKillop Elementary, nominated by Principal Walter Perez. Mrs. Larkin teaches second grade and this is her third year in Melissa.

Fun Facts:

  • My family includes my husband, my baby boy, two dogs and a tortoise.
  • I played volleyball in college.
  • Before I wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to study computer science!

When and why did you decide that you wanted to become a teacher?

I have always loved math and science, but when I was younger, I didn’t enjoy reading and writing very much. I was lucky enough to have a teacher in 9th grade who showed me how powerful words were! I want to help students find a passion for learning too!

What is your favorite lesson to teach?

I love getting to explore our world through science activities. We get to discover nature and find the answer to questions like, “Why does the moon change?” or “How does it snow?”

What is your favorite Core Value and why?

My favorite Core Value is Humility. I grew up playing a variety of team sports and we were always taught that we had to work together as a team. Not one player was more or less important than another. We won together and we lost together. We are a puzzle piece in a much bigger picture.

What is the best thing about being a Cardinal?

Being a Cardinal means that someone has your back and you have theirs. When you’re a Cardinal, you truly are a part of Team Melissa.
