The Teacher Spotlight is a weekly piece where we feature our leaders at Melissa Schools. Check back each Monday during the school year to meet a new teacher!

Our first Teacher Spotlight for the 2016-17 school year shines on Brian Thornburg from Harry McKillop Elementary, nominated by Principal Walter Perez. Mr. Thornburg teaches third grade and this is his fourth year in Melissa.

Fun Facts:

  • I am a Veteran of the United States Air Force.
  • I love to travel and have been to over 21 countries.
  • I have been known to be a bit of a prankster, although, no one can prove anything!

When and why did you decide that you wanted to become a teacher?

While I was in the service I was an instructor and trained people how to do the same job that I had. I really developed a love of teaching then. The jobs I had after the Air Force were just not very fulfilling. I wanted a job where I felt that I made a difference. Teaching allows me to make that difference daily.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?

I love to teach science! Seeing kids solve problems and ask questions about the world that they live in is amazing. I love to see that sense of discovery.

What is your favorite Core Value and why?

My favorite Core Value is Humility. Being proud of your accomplishments is important. However, it is more important to realize that we would not have developed into the people we are today without our friends family and Team Members there supporting us along the way.

What is the best thing about being a Cardinal?

I absolutely love the community that we are a part of. I have a son in 8th grade and twin daughters in 5th grade. I love that feeling of connection that my family and I have with other Melissa Cardinals!
