Students at Melissa Middle School and Melissa Ridge Intermediate participated in a “Hats for Harvey” fundraiser in September to raise money for Refugio ISD, a school district in South Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey.

For a donation of $2 at Melissa Middle School and $1 at Melissa Ridge Intermediate, students could wear a hat to school for a day. Students, teachers, and administrators participated, and together the schools raised $750 for Refugio ISD.

According to Melissa Middle School principal Jim Miller, many students contributed a $5 or $20 donation without any intention of wearing a hat to school – they simply wanted to support the cause.

Melissa Ridge Intermediate principal Michele Austin added, “The fundraiser ignited rich class conversations about empathy and reaching out as a community to help fellow students, and ensure that they would have their basic school supply needs met when they return to school and their learning environment.”
