Free breakfast and lunch meals will be available each school day for Melissa ISD students in Pre-K through fifth grade for the duration of the 2021-2022 school year.

The free meals are made possible by the Area Eligibility Waiver issued by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in response to the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). The waiver was approved for Melissa ISD on July 29, 2021.

This waiver grants Melissa ISD to serve free meals only through the fifth grade level, based on the percentage of students participating in the free and reduced-price meal program. Meal pricing for middle school and high school students can be found on the Melissa ISD Child Nutrition page.

Elementary and early childhood education students who take advantage of the free meals at school do not need to fill out a form in order to qualify; however, families are encouraged to complete the free and reduced-price meal application to continue receiving free or reduced-price meals at school after the Area Eligibility Waiver expires. The free and reduced-price meal application impacts the following:

  • Free or discounted meals at school
  • Increased school funding to ensure students receive the support they need at school
  • Discounts on college application fees
  • Discounts on fees for academic tests such as the SAT
