The Melissa High School Mighty Cardinal Band competed in the UIL Area B Marching Contest on Saturday, where they placed second overall out of 35 competing bands and earned a spot at the 2018 UIL State Marching Contest.
Senior drum majors Oscar Villegas and Rodneigh Farrow lead the marching band, along with senior musicians Tyler Wilson, trumpet, and Jasper Murphy, clarinet.
The Mighty Cardinal Band is under the direction of Jerry Whorton, Director of Bands at Melissa Schools.
“This year we have focused on small amounts of improvement one day at a time,” Whorton said. “Our students have been resilient while handling moments of adversity such as rain and missed performances. I am excited about our students finally receiving the fruits of their labor. This second place finish at area competition was a spot that was earned by our students, staff, parents, and community. Team Melissa won this weekend.”
The high school band leadership team also includes Aaron Dugger, Matthew Filosa, David Landry, Taylor Tucker, Justin Madrid, Matthew Malone, Andrew Cory, Paul Bussert, and Stacey Piyakhun.
The Mighty Cardinal Band competes at state next week on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in San Antonio. Ahead of state, the band will perform their 2018 competition show “The Colony” for the community at Cardinal Stadium on Monday, Nov. 5. The performance will begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free.
