Melissa High School alum, Caeleb Fender, was recently named an Outstanding Performer at the 2019 Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest.
Fender, who graduated from Melissa in the spring, was a tenor trombonist and section leader in the Mighty Cardinal Band. He has since entered the Moore Norman Technology Center in Norman, Okla.
According to the University Interscholastic League (UIL), approximately 100,000 students participated in last year’s regional music contests and 25,000 students performed at the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest. From there, only two to three percent of solo performers were distinguished as an Outstanding Performer; one being Fender.
Fender received a draped medal and a letter of recognition from Dr. Bradley N. Kent, UIL State Director of Music.
This marks the third consecutive year that the Melissa Band program was represented by an Outstanding Soloist at the Texas State Solo-Ensemble Contest.
