Melissa High School student Jasper Murphy has been named a Commended Student in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program for his performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Principal Kenneth Wooten presented Murphy with a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) last week.
Murphy, a senior, was one of 120 students at Melissa High School who entered the competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in 2017, joining 1.6 million students who participated nationwide. As a Commended Student, Murphy placed among the top 50,000 scorers.
Murphy will graduate in the spring and go on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Arts and Entertainment Technologies. He plays the saxophone in the Mighty Cardinal Band and he is part of the Melissa High School robotics team.
