Melissa Schools selects Jerry Whorton as new Director of Bands

Melissa Schools welcomes Jerry Whorton to the Cardinal family as the new Director of Bands. Whorton currently serves Winona ISD, where he is the Director of Fine Arts and Bands.

Whorton brings with him ten years of professional experience in Music Education, and nine years as a Director of Bands at both the high school and collegiate level.

Mr. Whorton says that he looks forward to increasing student academic success in the classroom while expanding the overall band enrollment and musical accolades.

“It is my goal for the Melissa Schools band department to continue to be a state recognized program and flourish as the district continues to expand,” Whorton said Monday.

Throughout his career, Whorton has led his bands to earn first divisions at all UIL competitions and earned eight consecutive years of UIL Sweepstakes awards, in addition to increasing band size and musicianship. Under his direction, his marching band was the runner-up for the UIL State Marching Contest and four-time UIL Area C finalist.

Whorton’s students have consistently earned chairs in All-Region Band and received first divisions at Region Solo & Ensemble before advancing to Texas State Solo & Ensemble. Additionally, Whorton’s concert bands have won the TMEA Region and Area Honorband competitions, along with placing twice as a State Finalist.

Dr. Robert Rich, Melissa Schools Deputy Superintendent, spoke Monday of the hiring process and selection of a Director of Bands.

Mr. Whorton was selected by a committee of parents, students, and staff from a pool of highly successful band directors, from both inside and outside of Texas,” Dr. Rich said. “There was a clear consensus from the committee that Mr. Whorton was the exemplary candidate to take our program to the next level.”

Whorton and his family will move from Lindale, Texas to Melissa this summer.

In the coming months, Mr. Whorton will be begin communicating with parents of students in the Mighty Cardinal Band program regarding the next steps in this transition, including a Meet the Director night.
