Melissa Middle School has been re-designated as a “School to Watch” and will be recognized nationally this summer among distinguished middle schools from across the country.

Melissa Middle School is one of only 35 schools in Texas to receive the “School to Watch” honor this year, after receiving the initial distinction in 2016.

As part of the re-designation process, representatives from the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform and the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) visited Melissa Middle School earlier this year for observation. The group spent a day on campus, going into every classroom, and interviewed a panel of more than 30 students, staff, and community members.

“I’m extremely proud of our students, staff, and community for continuing the great legacy and trajectory of Melissa Middle School that was established in years prior,” said principal Marcus Eckert. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work of our students, the inspiring commitment of our staff, and the phenomenal support of our parents and community. I am grateful to the ‘Schools to Watch’ program for recognizing our students’ efforts and validating the talented and selfless teachers who make a difference in our students’ lives every day. I cannot think of a better way to recognize our collective team for inspiring excellence at MMS.”

The school will be recognized in Washington, D.C. in June at the National Schools to Watch Conference. Select administrators and teaching staff will present at a state academic conference in the upcoming year.

Students and staff will celebrate the “School to Watch” re-designation with a pep rally on May 10 at 3:30 p.m. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend the celebration.

Billy Pringle, State Director for Schools to Watch in Texas, stated, “We congratulate principal Marcus Eckert and his staff, students, and parents for being a campus that does great things for all of their students. This school has demonstrated that a high-performing middle school is a place that focuses on academic growth and achievement. Melissa Middle School is a place that recognizes the importance of meeting the needs of all students and ensures that every child has access to a challenging, high-quality education.”
