Melissa Middle School was named the champion of the UIL A+ Academics District Competition for the second consecutive year, earning first place overall ahead of Sanger, Aubrey, Anna, Celina, and Gainesville.
Over 100 students from Melissa Middle School participated in UIL academics this year, representing grades 6-8. Melissa students received nearly 60 individual awards and 25 team awards, ranging from first to sixth place.
Students competed in the following categories: Art, Calculator, Chess, Dictionary Skills, Impromptu Speaking, Listening Skills, Maps/Graphs/Charts, Math, Modern Oratory, Music Memory, Number Sense, One Act Play, Oral Reading, Science, Social Studies, Spelling, Editorial Writing, and Ready Writing.
Also part of UIL academics was the middle school 2018 UIL One Act Play competition, where the Melissa Middle School Performing Arts program won first place for the first time in school history.
Kathleen Fleck, sixth and seventh grade math teacher, served as the Melissa Middle School UIL A+ Academics sponsor.
