Melissa Schools in partnership with Perkins&Will and Crossland Construction broke ground last month on a third elementary school, Willow Wood Elementary, located within the Willow Wood subdivision and expected to open in time for the 2021-2022 school year.
The groundbreaking ceremony held on Aug. 20, 2020 welcomed a small group of future Willow Wood students and their family members who took pictures with district officials, school board members, and more. Another special guest was Fred Phillips, developer of the Willow Wood subdivision, who donated the property to the district that will become Willow Wood Elementary.
Representing Melissa ISD were members of the Melissa Schools executive leadership team and elementary leadership team, in addition to Board President George James and Board Vice President Bruce Minchey of the Melissa Schools Board of Trustees.
“The groundbreaking ceremony was a fantastic event,” said Keith Murphy, Superintendent of Melissa Schools. “We were excited to get to spend time with a wonderful group of kids and their families after being apart during the COVID-19 lockdown, knowing that there truly are brighter days ahead in Melissa. There were so many quality families represented at the ceremony. In addition to our architectural and construction partners and Crossland Construction owner Ivan Crossland, it was a privilege for us to welcome Mr. Fred Phillips, who we’ve worked with for the last six years. To finally see this project come to fruition made for a great day.”
Beginning next fall, Willow Wood Elementary, North Creek Elementary, and Harry McKillop Elementary will follow the standard K-5 grade configuration and the Melissa Ridge Education Center will become an early childhood education center. Until then, the community could see portable buildings added to the existing elementary campuses to accommodate the continued fast growth in Melissa ISD.
A timeline of the district’s development milestones from 2015 to present day, along with a list of current and future projects, is available online at www.melissaisd.org/growth.
Announcements will continue to be published on the district website and shared on the Melissa ISD social media accounts.
