The Melissa High School Powerlifting teams saw their first action of the season on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Anna. Senior Brianna Cole led the way for the team, earning her first gold medal this year with a first place total of 705. First time lifters Natalia Cox, Lexi Murry, and Michelle Popovich all had strong showings in their first meet. Freshman Omar Villegas placed fifth in his first powerlifting meet with a 585 total.
Melissa was represented by 10 boys at this meet, which is the largest team to compete for the Cardinals in recent years. This was the inaugural meet for most of these young men, and they competed with great effort and gained valuable experience. Trevor Duggan, a freshman, hit the 400 lb. mark on squat. Larry Gaston, also a freshman, had the highest deadlift among Cardinal lifters while going nine for nine on the day. Martin Flores, along with Gaston, registered the highest bench press among Cardinal lifters.
This meet served as a great starting point for this year’s lifters who will seek to improve from week to week. The next meet for both the boys’ and girls’ teams will take place this Saturday, Jan. 23 in Princeton.View the Powerlifting Schedule
