The Melissa High School powerlifting team had a successful meet last weekend in Sulphur Springs. This marked the team’s first competition of the year which included squat, bench press, and deadlift.

The boys were led by Brian Blackwell, Super Heavy class, and Omar Villegas, 148 lb. class. Blackwell squatted 440 lbs., benched 240 lbs., deadlifted 405 lbs., and had an overall total of 1,085 lbs. Villegas had a squat of 365 lbs., bench of 220 lbs., and deadlift of 365 lbs. for a total of 950 lbs.

The girls were led by Natalia Cox, 165 lb. class. Cox placed fifth in a class of over 20 lifters that ranged from 3A to 6A competition. She squatted 250 lbs., benched 140 lbs., and deadlifted 240 lbs. for a total of 630 lbs.

“I am extremely proud of this group of kids,” said powerlifting coach Jacob Alford. “They have been working hard in the weight room since before Christmas, and will only improve from here.”

The team competes at their next meet this Saturday, Jan. 20 in Princeton.
