Harry McKillop Elementary and North Creek Elementary teamed up last fall for “Hats for Hunger” to raise funds for North Texas Feed the Need. The schools recently surpassed their fundraising goal of $2,500.
During the “Hats for Hunger” fundraiser, elementary students could donate one dollar in exchange for wearing a hat all day at school on Friday. The idea came about after the schools received a donation of $2,500 from History Maker Homes for supplemental learning tools; they decided to “pay it forward” by helping children in need.
Over the course of three months, the schools raised $2,698.20 in donations from students, parents, and staff.
Last week, Melissa elementary principals Walter Perez and Michele Austin donated the proceeds to Sarah Stoltzfus and Millie Rodriguez, representatives for North Texas Feed the Need. Also in attendance were Krissy Womack, Assistant Principal at Harry McKillop Elementary, and Keith Murphy, Superintendent of Melissa Schools.
