Melissa High School athletes Gunnar Murphy and Elijah Mackey competed Friday and Saturday in the 90th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin against some of the most elite competition in not only the state of Texas, but all over the United States.
This marked the first time in Melissa High School history that any boys have qualified for this prestigious invitational meet.
Mackey took to the track Friday against the top boys in the state in the 1600 meters, finishing with a time of 4:31.19; his second fastest time of the season by only 5 seconds. He finished third best in the 5A division and 27th overall.
Murphy competed Saturday in the shot put. Coming into the competition, Murphy was ranked in the top five with his season best mark of 59’ 3”.
Saturday’s field consisted of several athletes who have committed to Division 1 programs. Murphy had several throws in warm-ups that would have gotten him a top five finish. However, during the competition he had a difficult time not stepping on the toe board and all of his throws were called a foul by the judges.
The Melissa High School Cardinal Track and Field team competes this Thursday, April 6 in Farmersville, followed by the District 11-4A meet from April 12-13 in Princeton.
