Melissa High School Lady Cardinals Priscilla Adejokun and Brianna Cole took home gold medals in Powerlifting at Saturday’s meet in Princeton. Additionally, they were each awarded the Best Lifter awards, an award given to the athlete who lifts the most weight based on their body weight.
Cole won the Best Lifter award for the lower half of the weight classes, while Adejokun won the award for the upper half.
Adejokun squatted 440 lbs., bench pressed 200 lbs., and deadlifted 445 lbs., which is five pounds more than she did to set a record at last year’s state meet. Cole also posted impressive marks with 280 lbs. on the squat, 145 lbs. on bench press, and 325 lbs. on deadlift. The two lifters’ totals automatically qualify them for this year’s regional meet.
On the boys’ side, several lifters saw improvement as this young group continues to gain experience. Performances on note include Kris Blevins’ squat of 330 lbs., which was an improvement of 30 lbs. In addition, Tyson Owen’s total of 870 was an improvement of 40 lbs.
The next girls’ Powerlifting meet will take place Thursday, Feb. 11 at S&S High School. The next boys’ meet will take place Saturday, Feb. 13 at S&S High School.
