The Lady Cardinals represented Melissa well Thursday night at the Region 6 Division II Girls’ Powerlifting Meet.

Natalia Cox entered the meet sitting in twelfth place in the 165 lb. weight class and walked away with a seventh place finish.

Cox ended the night with a personal best squat of 300 lbs., a bench of 155 lbs., and a personal best deadlift of 260 lbs. Trying to jump into fifth place, Cox fought for a 300 lb. deadlift on her final lift and came up just short.

Priscilla Adejokun won first place in her weight class, earning her fourth straight trip to the State Powerlifting Meet. She also won awards for Most Outstanding Squat, Most Outstanding Deadlift, and Most Outstanding Overall Lifter, in addition to a $250 scholarship from the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association.

Adejokun broke multiple regional records last night in the 259 lb. weight class, including the squat at 530, bench at 260, deadlift at 510, and overall total weight at 1300.

“It was a great night for the Melissa Lady Cardinals,” said Coach Jacob Alford. “I am proud of these two young ladies and the work they have put in this year. They have shown up at 6:00 a.m. every school day since December to work out and prepare to compete. They had a wonderful night, and it was well deserved.”

The Lady Cardinals travel to Waco for the State Powerlifting Meet on Friday, March 17.
