Harry McKillop Elementary student Ava Kroese recently stepped in as a “Player for the Day” with the Melissa High School Lady Cardinal soccer team.

To kick off Ava’s day of festivities, the Lady Cards treated the third grade student to breakfast before school. Ava then received her own Lady Cardinal soccer uniform and warm-up gear, each printed with her favorite number.

Ava later joined the team as they prepared for their game against Denison, which included leading the team in warm-up exercises. During the game, Ava was named an “honorary captain” for the night as she sat on the bench with the team and cheered them to victory.

As a bonus, the team surprised Ava with lunch at school the next day.

“Player for the Day” was a first-time featured item in the silent auction at last October’s Melissa Elementary Fall Carnival.

“The event was a huge success and we look forward to next year’s winner,” said coach Manuel Avila.
