This issue of the Cardinal Sports Report features recaps from Tennis, Football, Golf, Cross Country, and Basketball.
The Melissa High School tennis team finished district play in third place at 2-2. The team begins their playoff run on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in a bi-district match against the second place team from District 12. A win would advance Melissa to the area tennis competition on Thursday, Oct. 17 against Carrollton Ranchview.
In addition, the team received a number of all-district honors: John Lewis, Jake Fowler, Dawson Mercer were named 1st Team in Boys’ Singles; Zach Butterfield was named 2nd Team in Boys Singles; Sierra Thomas was named 1st Team in Girls’ Singles; Sarah Keeton was named 2nd Team in Girls’ Singles. John Lewis and Dawson Mercer, and Jake Fowler and Zach Butterfield, were named 1st Team in Boys’ Doubles. Sarah Keeton and AJ Gonzales were named 2nd Team in Mixed Doubles.
The Melissa Cardinals stand at 1-0 in district play and 3-2 overall, currently ranked eleventh in 4A D1. Victories for the Cardinals include wins over Argyle Liberty Christian and Whitehouse, in addition to starting district play with a win over Paris, the number-five team in the state.
Upcoming games include Oct. 11 at Anna, Oct. 18 against Celina, and Oct. 25 at Argyle. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
The Melissa High School golf teams played in the Melissa Invitational on Tuesday, playing in a field of 5A and 6A schools. Both the Cardinals and Lady Cardinals placed third. The Cardinals were led by Xavier Bighaus who shot 75 and won third overall in a scorecard playoff. The Lady Cardinals were led by Lindsay Bauslaugh who shot 94.
The Melissa cross country teams compete in their district race on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Old Celina Park. Varsity girls race at 9:00 a.m., varsity boys at 9:30 a.m., JV girls at 10:00 a.m., and JV boys at 10:30 a.m. Middle school races will follow in the afternoon.
“The Lady Cardinals have continued to show improvement from week to week,” said girls’ coach Clay McCarter. “We have some of the hardest working girls that I have ever had the pleasure of being around. They show up every morning at 6:00 a.m. ready to rock and roll. Most all of our 11 athletes have broken their own personal records at some point or another this season.”
The Melissa Cardinal basketball teams are gearing up for the start of the season. After school practices begin Wednesday, Oct. 30. The teams play their first home games against Lake Dallas on Tuesday, Nov. 19 in the main gym at Melissa Middle School. Ahead of that are two scrimmages, on Nov. 9 and Nov. 12. The basketball schedules are now posted online.
