The Melissa Booster Club hosted the annual Melissa Cardinal football athletic banquet on Thursday, Jan. 24 and recognized the following student-athletes with awards for the 2018 season.

The varsity tennis team began their spring season on Friday at the Anna Invitational, where juniors Sarah Keeton and Sierra Thomas won the championship trophy in the girls’ doubles.
Wilson Gustaveson, junior, and freshman Reese Maddock took third place in the mixed doubles. Sophomores AJ Gonzales and Mackenzie Wilke both took home a consolation medal in the singles.
The Texas Sports Writers Association (TXSWA) announced their volleyball awards for the 2018 season, five of which were awarded to Melissa players.
Caroline Kasson was named the 4A Player of the Year. Kasson, along with Susan Blake, received the 1st Team Outside Hitter award. Charley Lane and Sophia Davis received honorable mentions.
The boys’ and girls’ powerlifting teams traveled to the Sunnyvale Invitational on Saturday, where both teams placed in the top ten out of 17 teams and brought home a total of six individual medals. The girls’ powerlifting team finished in fifth place, while the boys’ team took seventh.
Viktorya Dietrich and Mackenzie Wilkie led the Lady Cardinals, taking second place in the 97 lb. class and third place in the 198 lb. class, respectively. Katelynn Wagner placed fifth in the 105 lb. class and Raegan Knight placed fifth in the 114 lb. class.
Dietrich finished the day with a squat of 135 lbs., bench press of 60 lbs., deadlift of 175 lbs., and an overall total of 370 lbs. Wilkie finished the day with a squat of 215 lbs., bench press of 105 lbs., deadlift of 215 lbs., and an overall total of 535 lbs.
For the boys’ team, Omar Villegas and Caleb Kroese led the Cardinals, taking first place in the 148 lb. class and second place in the 220 lb. class, respectively. Villegas finished the day with a squat of 440 lbs., bench press of 230 lbs., deadlift of 400 lbs., and an overall total of 1070 lbs. Kroese finished the day with a squat of 500 lbs., bench press of 245 lbs., deadlift of 455 lbs., and an overall total of 1200 lbs.
Omar Villegas currently ranks in the top five in the region.
The Melissa powerlifting teams return to action on Feb. 7 at the Paris Wildcat Invitational.
Boys’ basketball finished the first half of district play on Friday. The leading scorers were Ezra Monroe and Ricky Morning with 15 points each. The Cardinals’ season record is 18-7 and they hold second place in district with a record of 4-1.
The Melissa soccer teams returned to the field Monday night to take on Brownwood, where the Cardinals came away with a 0-0 draw and the Lady Cardinals won 2-0.
The Lady Cardinals won a shutout victory, extending their current run to seven. Briley Bowen’s rocket from long range broke the tie and Lucy Hurst sealed the deal for the 2-0 win.
Both teams return to action Friday as they travel to Sherman.
