This week’s Teacher Spotlight shines on Mary Lorenson from Melissa Ridge Intermediate, nominated by Principal Tami Hayes. Ms. Lorenson teaches 4th Grade Math and this is her first year in Melissa.

Fun Facts:

  • I had three beautiful children in three years (no twins or triplets).
  • I love sports.
  • I’m a parrot head (Jimmy Buffet fan).

When and why did you decide that you wanted to become a teacher?

I played school all the time growing up and I babysat so much I paid cash for my first car. I’ve wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember because I love kids, plain and simple.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?

I love teaching students to problem solve. I enjoy questioning their strategies and listening to students justify their reasoning for solving problems the way they did. Teaching problem solving in math also teaches students how to persevere through challenges, an important character trait.

What is your favorite Core Value and why?

Hope is my favorite Core Value because it’s such a big part of my role as a teacher. School and life in general can be difficult and hope is what keeps us going in search for all things possible.

What is the best thing about being a Cardinal?

I have never had so many parents willing to help in the 13 years I’ve been teaching. It’s awesome! We all know it takes a village and the community pulls no punches when it comes to pitching in. Together we will do wonderful things.
