The 2016-17 school year has come to an end, but the Mighty Cardinal Band continues to win awards. The Melissa High School Band has earned another “first” for the program.
Earlier this month the band advanced to the area level of the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Outstanding Performance Series (OPS) competition.
The band’s UIL Concert March “The Klaxon” was judged Monday at the area competition at Idalou High School, and took first place in the march competition. This qualified the Mighty Cardinal Band for state-level competition.
This qualification marks the first time that a Melissa Band concert recording has advanced to the state level.
Judging at the state level of the OPS competition takes place on July 20 at the Texas Bandmaster’s Association Convention in San Antonio.
The band that is named the 2017 ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series winner will be recognized at the 2018 Texas Music Educators Convention and be placed on a CD that will be distributed to all Texas Public Small Schools across the State of Texas.
