Melissa Schools administration, staff, and board members joined the community on Monday, May 15 to officially break ground on the construction of a new Melissa High School facility.
The first phase of the new high school, located East of Hwy 121 and Melissa Rd (FM 545) on Milrany Ln in Melissa, is expected to be completed and operational in time for the 2018-19 academic year.
In October 2015, Melissa Schools organized a Community Task Force comprised of over 80 district personnel and community stakeholders. The group conducted a needs assessment and proposed a list of valued priorities, which played an integral role in the district’s development of a master plan to address rapid student growth and facility needs.
The Melissa Schools Board of Trustees approved the calling of a bond election last February, and the district’s $150 million bond proposition passed last May with 87 percent votes in favor.
The construction of a new high school is the first major project to come out of the district’s 2016 bond program.
“This represents a great day for future generations of children attending Melissa Schools. This project was made possible by the support of our parents, churches, and other community members. I would like to say thank you on behalf of all the kids attending Melissa Schools.
It has always been a goal of this board and previous board members to build a high school on this 80 acres. I am so pleased that they had the vision to purchase this property for this state of the art high school facility.
One of my favorite quotes is, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’ It is obvious today that our Board of Trustees has a clear vision for the future of our students. This is just the first phase of our high school. We also plan on opening up a new elementary in the North Creek addition at the same time we open the doors of this high school. It’s a great day to be a part of Team Melissa.”
“This is a great day for Melissa ISD. Nothing defines a town like the high school does and I believe that all of Melissa is going to be extremely proud of what we build here.”
I would like to give a special thanks to all the Melissa ISD parents and residents for their unwavering support of not only this project, but every project that we come to them for. I’d also like to thank the Wright family for their willingness to sell us this property back in 2004. I want to thank everyone on that board at that time. I also want to thank our present board for all of their hard work, and give a special thanks to Paul Anderson for all that he’s done, going above and beyond.
Thank you to all the people involved with our building programs. It is our community that defines what they want in a high school and our other buildings. I want to thank them for all their dedication to the district and to making sure that their kids and our kids have the very, very best.
Lastly, thank you to Keith Murphy, Robert Rich, and district administration for their financial leadership and brilliance; making the building of a new high school and new elementary school possible.”
