The Melissa High School powerlifting team competed in the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, where both the boys’ and girls’ teams showed great improvements.
The Cardinals were led by Josh Hathorn, Omar Villegas, and Ja’Bray Young.
Hathorn placed second in 132 lb. weight class with a squat of 315 lbs., a bench of 205 lbs., a deadlift of 370 lbs., and an overall total of 890 lbs.
Villegas placed second in the 148 lb. weight class with a squat of 370 lbs., a bench of 220 lbs., a deadlift of 370 lbs., and an overall total of 960 lbs.
Young placed fourth in the 220 lb. weight class with a squat of 515 lbs., bench of 275 lbs., deadlift of 450 lbs., and an overall total of 1,240 lbs. Coach Jacob Alford credited Young with having “the most outstanding lifts of the day for the Cardinals.”
Braylon Brown also placed fifth in the 181 lb. weight class.
The Lady Cardinals were led by Jaclyn Rodgers, who placed second in the 259 lb. weight class with a squat of 305 lbs., a bench of 175 lbs., a deadlift of 330 lbs., and an overall total of 810 lbs. She currently holds the first place spot in the region.
The powerlifting team competes next on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Lone Oak Invitational Powerlifting Meet.
