Several seniors from the Melissa High School Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer teams were recognized Monday night for their contribution to the program, before taking on the Gainesville Leopards.
August Greer, Jose Malpica, Erasmo Paulin, and Chris Medina for the boys, and Amanda Kocsis, Katie Brown, and Abby Minchey for the girls, have been part of the soccer program since its inception three years ago.
The last couple of years, the boys added Nick Palmer, Nick Lanier, Nate Smith, and Elijah Mackey, while the girls added Josie Monk.
Each senior was recognized and given gifts by their teammates and coaches. Despite this being their final home game, the seniors still have a lot to play for.
Cardinals Fall to Leopards
In the boys’ match, the Cardinals showed their grit; the early going in their game saw them defending, but holding up well to the pressure. They allowed a handful of shots from the distance, but nothing to truly test keeper Josh Love.
In the second half, the Cards created a couple of opportunities, but in the end saw the defense continue to get tested. It was Gainesville who would break the deadlock deep in the second half, and that lone goal would be the difference in the match.
Lady Cardinals Route Lady Leopards 9-0
In the girls’ match, the Lady Cardinals looked to take one step closer to the district title. Early goals from Emma Schaeffer, Gillian Stopinski, Amanda Kocsis, and Kendall Bates help put the Lady Cards up early.
Josie Monk would add goal number seven at the final whistle before the half.
The Lady Cardinals were almost in cruise control down the stretch as they continued to add goals in the second half. Amanda Kocsis finished her hat trick and Brittany Morgan banged one home as the Lady Cards routed the Leopards 9-0.
The boys play their final district match Friday, March 3 in Anna at 5:30 p.m. with the girls to follow. The girls finish their district calendar Monday, March 6 at Celina at 6:00 p.m.
