The Melissa High School Lady Cardinal varsity basketball team defeated Terrell High School in the bi-district round of the playoffs Monday evening.
The game was close at the end of the first and second quarters with Melissa at a one-point lead and a five-point lead, respectively. The second half was also a closely-fought game as the Lady Cards extended their lead to 12 by the end.
With a final score of 60-48, the Lady Cardinals clenched the bi-district champion title, improving their record to 31-3.
Three Lady Cards scored in double digits. Taylor Thomas was the leading scorer with 18 points, followed by Ashley Gideon with 17 points and Sally Clemmons with 10 points. Natalie Conlin was the leading rebounder with 10 boards. Taylor Carney, Taylor Thomas, and Ashley Gideon each had seven rebounds.
Additionally, during the fourth quarter as Taylor Thomas drained one of her six shots, she surpassed the 1000th career point mark. Coach Heather Lane presented Taylor with a game ball commemorating the moment.
The Lady Cardinals advance to the area playoff game this Friday, Feb. 16 at a site to be determined. Melissa will play the winner of Tuesday night’s match-up between Krum and Wilmer-Hutchins.
