The Varsity Lady Cardinal Wrestling team competed in the District 9-5A tournament Thursday and came out on top as the first 5A District Champion wrestling team in Melissa High School history.
Tournament champions Makayla Watson, Lilly Rogers, and Alyssa Rose led the Lady Cards to the champion title.
Other wrestlers scoring points were runner-up Jessica Gonzales, third place medalists Camille Bogdan and Hastings Frederick, fourth place medalists Whitney Legg, Sarah Keeton, and Courtney Chamberlain, and fifth place medalist Paige Anderson.
All 10 athletes qualified for regionals at Bryan-College Station next week.
In addition to leading the team, Watson received the Outstanding Wrestler Award, another first for the Lady Cardinal Wrestling program.
“This was a total team effort from every member,” said Coach Rick Gagarin. “Going into the final matches, Melissa, Carrollton Creekview, Lovejoy, and Lancaster were all within 12 points of each other. Melissa had four wrestlers in the finals and needed pins to pull Melissa, 4A, over all the 5A opponents.”
“With the last match of the night, needing Alyssa Rose to pull out a win over Lancaster, it came down to the final period before Rose pinned Lancaster to solidify the district championship. Melissa won by two points over runner-up Carrollton Creekview.”
The Lady Cards travel to Bryan, Texas next week to compete at the regional tournament in hopes of getting as many wrestlers to the state tournament the following weekend.
