The Melissa High School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams traveled to Gainesville Friday night.
Looking to continue their winning ways, the Lady Cards took on the Lady Leopards in the first game and came out on top.
The game’s outcome was evident early on as the Lady Cards knocked in two goals inside the first three minutes, courtesy of Kendall Bates. By the five-minute mark, the lead was three as Emma Schaeffer found the net. By half time Gillian Stopinski, Lilly Hubbard, Autumn Cory, and Grace Tegerdine all added goals, bringing the lead to seven.
In the second half, the Lady Cards pulled back their attack, but still managed to create chances.
Brittany Morgan made her first appearance of the year as a field player and scored her first career goal for the Lady Cardinals. Joining her on the score sheet in the second half was Jenna Daniel with her first high school goal.
The Lady Cards dominated possession from the onset and cruised to a comfortable 9-0 victory, pushing them atop the district with Celina.
The Cardinals followed with a nail-biter battle against the Gainesville Leopards. Despite a tight defense early on by the team and net-minder Josh Love, the Cards ultimately fell short with a final score of 0-2.
The Lady Cardinals go head-to-head with Celina Monday night in Melissa at 5:00 p.m. to vie for the top spot in the district. The Cardinals round out the first half of district play Friday at home against Anna.
