The Melissa High School Lady Cardinal Soccer team hosted Celina at Cardinal Stadium Monday night in a battle of undefeated district 5-4A teams.
From the opening whistle, the Lady Cards dominated possession and looked to take an early lead. Kendall Bates broke through five minutes into the game with a shot from distance that found the bottom corner.
The Lady Cards kept the ball in the Celina end until Emma Schaeffer found the second goal for Melissa. It was a cross from Gillian Stopinski that Schaeffer was able to redirect into the net.
After halftime the Lady Cards could not find the handle as Celina started to gain possession. The third goal of the game came from Celina as they cut the Melissa lead in half. This seemed to light a fire under the Lady Cards as regained control of the game and pushed for another goal.
In the end, it was a cross from Josie Monk that found Schaeffer who beat the Celina defense and goal keeper, walking the ball into the net and pushing the lead back to two.
This would be all the Lady Cards would need to hold on for a 3-1 win, and sole possession of first place.
The Lady Cardinals round out the first half of district play Friday as they host Anna at 5:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
