The Melissa High School Lady Cardinal Soccer team clenched another district title last Friday after facing Celina in hopes of finishing off district play undefeated.
With several starters out, the Lady Cards faced a tough first half as they faced the district’s top score and blustery winds. The Lady Cards’ stout defense held up their end of the bargain, offering Celina only a handful of chances.
Melissa’s defense held and the offense showed that the lack of starters only meant the reserves would have to step up and play a big role.
Midway through the first half, Gillian Stopinski ran down a ball in the in the penalty area, fighting for the shot that would eventually find the feet of Amanda Kocsis. Kocsis knew what to do and put the Lady Cards in front.
At the half, the Lady Cards’ stifling defense held strong to their 1-0 lead. The Lady Cards would lose two more players to injury and would face the second half without two more starters.
Early in the second, it was again Stopinski legging out a deep ball from Josie Monk. This time, she took control, slipped past the Celina defense, and doubled the lead.
For most of the second half, it appeared that Celina wouldn’t even produce a chance, but a quick counter cut the Lady Cards’ lead to one. The Lady Cards would not be denied, and shortly after the Celina goal, a shot from Stopinski ricocheted off a Celina defender and into the goal to push the lead back to two.
Melissa finished off Celina 3-1; another undefeated district run. The Lady Cards play in the Area round next week. Time and location are yet to be determined.
