Dress Code (All Grade Levels)

Standard Dress Code

Melissa Schools is committed to providing a world-class educational opportunity to each student enrolled in the district. Efforts are being made to ensure the highest standards of performance for all stakeholders and to promote a safe and secure environment free of the perception of fear, threat, or danger.

The district’s dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents/guardians may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:


Dress Standards
  • Clothing, including tee shirts, which displays sexually oriented or explicit material, violence, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, gang or hate slogans or pictures deemed inappropriate by school officials.
  • No inappropriately worn or distracting clothing (e.g., too-tight tops or pants, lycra, spandex)

Shirt/Tops
  • Straps on shirts and tops must be at least two inches in width to be considered acceptable.
  • All undershirts must meet the minimum standard as listed above if visible
  • No sports jerseys, tanks, halters, or spaghetti straps unless worn with appropriate
    undershirt;
  • No backless tops
  • No holes or tears
  • No pajamas (unless designated by campus administration for special occasions)
  • No exposed cleavage
  • Must cover front and back midriff at all times whether standing, sitting, stretching, or bending. Must be able to be tucked in as well.
  • No see through (thin or mesh)

Pants/Shorts/Skirts
  • For Grades K-5: Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than fingertip length
  • For Grades 6-12: Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee on any side
  • Leggings, tights, or yoga pants must be worn with attire that meets the minimum standard for shorts or skirts, OR with an untucked shirt that comes down to mid-thigh
  • Must not be worn below the waist (“sagging” garments are not acceptable)
  • No pajamas (unless designated by campus administration for special occasions)
  • Tears, cuts, rips, and/or holes 3 inches or more above the knee are not allowed if it exposes the skin or undergarment.

Piercings
  • All facial or body piercing will be prohibited; clear spacers will be acceptable unless deemed distracting by an administrator / designee
  • Only earrings allowed, no gauges
  • Earrings, studs, and traditional jewelry are acceptable

Grooming
  • Hairstyles or colors deemed distracting, disruptive, or unsafe (head and facial) are not
    allowed
  • No bare feet, house shoes, slippers, or “heelies”
  • No chains on clothing or wallets or as necklaces
  • No exposed undergarments
  • No trench coats or dusters. All coats and jackets must be able to open in the front
  • No hats, caps, bandanas, hairnets, skull caps, or hoods
  • No sunglasses (unless prescribed by a physician)
  • Writing on body is not allowed
  • No tattoos with provocative, profane, or offensive pictures or writing.

Middle School Dress Code for Semi-Formal Dances

Boys
  • Dress code appropriate

Girls
  • Dress code appropriate in addition to:
    • No strapless dresses or spaghetti straps
    • No midriff
    • No backless
    • No cutout areas on dress (i.e. stomach area, sides, lower-back)
    • Dresses must be 5 inches above the knee in front and back (including dress slit)
    • No sunglasses
    • No hats

High School Dress Code for Semi-Formal Dances

Boys
  • Semi-formal attire: slacks or nice jeans, collared dress shirt and/or tie, dress shoes or boots
  • No tennis shoes or work boots
  • No sunglasses
  • No hats

Girls
  • One piece dresses only; shoulders and/or mid-back may be bare
  • No midriff may be exposed
  • No cutout areas on dress (i.e. stomach area, sides, lower-back)
  • Dress slit no further up the thigh than 5 inches above the knee will be permitted
  • Same criteria for dress length must be followed
  • Shoes: formal wear; no tennis shoes or the like; no sandals except for dress sandals
  • No sunglasses
  • No hats

High School Dress Code for Prom

With modesty in mind, the following dress code guidelines are recommended for the Melissa High School prom.

Ladies*
  • Dresses should not be cut too low in the front or the back.
  • Two pieces are allowed; however, if midriff is shown, there should be no more than 3 inches visible.
  • Hemlines or slits in dresses should be no more than 5 inches above the knee.
  • Dress shoes or dress boots preferred. No slippers or flip-flops.

*All ladies dresses should be approved by Coach Dotson (room 306) before prom.


Gentlemen
  • Tuxedos, suits, or sport coats with dress pants.
  • No blue jeans.
  • No opened toed shoes. Dress shoes or dress boots preferred. No slippers or flip-flops.
  • No bandanas, baseball hats, or non-formal hats.
