The Melissa High School Cardinal Football team qualified for the Texas State 7on7 Tournament on Saturday for the tenth time in the past 11 years.
The Cardinals went undefeated in pool play with wins over Burkburnett at 35-0, Electra, a forfeit, and Stamford at 36-14.
In the semi-final round, the Cardinals defeated Gainesville at 28-12, securing them a spot in the state tournament.
To determine the overall champion, Cardinal Brendon Lewis and the Kaufman quarterback played an old-fashioned game of rock-paper-scissors, with Lewis coming out on top.
The Texas State 7on7 Tournament will be held at College Station from June 29-30, where the Cardinals look to win their second State 7on7 Championship. A win would mark the first since 2011.
